Goober summoned up the courage to ask one of the older peanuts in the bag, “What are we? What kind of a nut is a peanut?”
The older peanut answered, ”Goober, we are really not a kind of nut at all. We have a shell like a nut and a name like a nut but we are not a nut. It’s a little confusing sometimes.”
Goober was shocked! “Not a nut!” he said to himself in disbelief. “How can that be? All the time I was growing in the ground I thought that I was a nut. My name sounds like a nut. People love nuts. There must be a mistake. I have to be a nut,” he thought.
The older peanut continued: “We are a special kind of plant that can help repair the soil where we are grown. Other plants take nitrogen out of the soil. We put nitrogen back into the soil. We make the soil good for other crops. That’s why the farmers love us.”
